Last year we made a fantastic Play dough recipe that uses just two ingredients! The best part was that most of us have these ingredients in our kitchen. It is a no cook recipe and you can very easily involve a child as young as 3 years old to help you make it! Intrigued? Find out how to make this Pumpkin play dough.
Four kids later, one thing I swear by for after school or calm down time is sensory play. I have seen the effect of how it instantly relaxes my children and how it eases all kinds of troubles. Also it helps build their vocabulary and promotes interpersonal skills. If you give the child some tools along with it, then it is gross and fine motor skills too! Although my kids have a variety of play dough accessories, their favorite is to let them use my kitchen utensils and tools.
We first made this pumpkin play dough recipe last October when we were on our vacation. I had no supplies with me and I made do with whatever was available in my sister’s kitchen. We tried quite a few things during those three weeks. This one, became everyone’s favorite. It is silky soft in texture and almost talcum powder like. If it dries off, don’t worry! You can very easily sweep it off. It doesn’t transfer color to clothing or furniture and if the kids rub it in to a rug or carpet, no problem! Your vacuum will pick it up.
Please be cautious though, this play dough recipe is not edible or taste safe. I gave it to my two year old under strict supervision and only because she is not the kind who puts things in her mouth. I did not give it to my same aged nephew or my youngest toddler because these kids put things in their mouth. You will have to use your judgement here. This play dough recipe however was used by kids aged 2- 12 yrs old on that trip and everyone loved it!
We used store bought Custard powder in this recipe. Custard powder is just corn flour. You can very easily substitute corn flour and a drop of color to make this recipe if you don’t have custard at home. We have made this this way sometimes and it becomes snow white in color if we don’t dye it.
The other ingredient that we used is hair conditioner. We used a free sample that we had. It doesn’t matter what kind of conditioner you are using because this is just to hold things together and give it that silkiness in touch.
Loving it so far? Hop on to this post for the recipe! There are three more fun recipes in that post so go ahead and experiment!
