I have a DIY printable Islamic Calendar to share with you today. It has a button slider to mark the date in Gregorian and Hijri, as well as a way to record your most important dates. I hope you enjoy building this with your children.

DIY printable Islamic Calendar

I had always been on the look out for a way to mark my Islamic and Gregorian dates on a calendar. Unfortunately, it is hard to find one that we truly like. So, this year we build ourselves a Hijra-Gregorian Calendar of our own.

The dates and months templates are available as a free download.

Please click here and I will send them to you.

About the Islamic Hijri Calendar

Muslim follow the Islamic Hijri Calendar that has 12 months but only 29-30 days depending on the moon sighting. This is because the Hijri Calendar is a Lunar calendar.

The Hijri Calendar marks the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah. This calendar is important to Muslims because it helps them keep track of Ramadan, Hajj, the two Eids and other important dates in Islam.

Also, some Islamic countries (like Saudi Arabia where we live) follows the Hijri Calendar officially.

Earlier, I wrote about fun ways to teach children the Hijri Calendar in this post here. This year we had a fun round up of people sharing their tips on how to teach Islamic calendar on Instagram.

Happy new Hijri year 1442 people! 🎉 let’s talk about FUN and SIMPLE ways to talk about teaching children to remember (or learn) the Hijri Calendar. I am sharing two super simple tips here that you can start using today. 1. Use calendars in your home! You can easily download Arabic calendars online… or buy them online or from stationaries. It’s 💯 percent the easiest way to teach kids. Include a Hijri Calendar in your family’s life! My daily diary 📔 has Arabic dates in it. That’s how I remember the date but… we also have lots of Arabic calendars at home. But duh… I live in Saudi! You guys… get it online. I prepared a printable calendar to remind kids the date a few days ago but… I’m still in negotiating mode with my kids to let me post it online! 🙈 #lifeofamomblogger 2. Write the date to remember it. This is a trick I learnt from my kids Arabic and Quran teachers. They ONLY use Arabic date in class from when they were in kindergarten. The teacher would write the date on top of the board as soon as she started class and ask kids to repeat after her before circle time. If you’re homeschooling, do this! (Even if you’re not!) Make it part of your daily activity that when kids are studying Arabic or reading the Quran you mark the date in Arabic and then ask them to repeat. Also, it helps to remind them when their Arabic birthday is! 😉 🎂 These are just two tips. I have 5 more tips on my blog at (https://www.jeddahmom.com/teach-hijri-calendar-in-a-fun-way/){https://www.jeddahmom.com/teach-hijri-calendar-in-a-fun-way/} I have a few friends sharing activities, printables and crafts to talk about the Hijri calendar. Hop on over: @insidefatimasworld @minimindfulmuslims @she_lives_her_life @ouramanahsourfutures @bilal_and_mr._shells @sunnah_hearts @ilmaeducation @thelittleislamicgarden @brb_raisingkids @thelittleislamicgarden @muslimahmotherhoodcoach Do you have an activity or a tip to teach kids about the Islamic calendar? DIY PRINTABLE ISLAMIC CALENDAR – Hijri Calendar craft

The calendar consists of two sheets – one with the dates and the other with the months. You have to layer one over the other and glue them together.

I laminated the sheets to make them sturdy but you can stick on a cardboard too, if you wish.

Next, I punched holes at the bottom and beginning of the dates and months (with a thick needle), threaded a string with a button over it and tied them at the back. The button moves up and down and can be used to mark the dates.

It is pretty straight forward. There are four buttons to be moved on the DIY printable Islamic Calendar.

  • Mark the English date
  • Mark the Gregorian months
  • Mark the Hijri months
  • Mark the Arabic date

The picture above doesn’t show the days. The printables have them though. I modified this so it now also includes sheets to mark the day and also, if you need to remember important dates, write them down on the sheet provided.

At the moment, our calendar is stuck in our kids’ bedroom. They have lots of fun changing the dates, each morning.

I hope you enjoy making your own DIY printable Hijri Calendar from our templates.
