Easy Ice Cream Craft and Sorting Activity for Preschoolers
This morning, my 3 year old practiced writing the letter I. We made this very simple ice cream craft. She enjoyed learning the letter as well as matching colors. Along the way we practiced some motor skills too. If you have a little toddler or preschooler, do try it with them.
This is one Ice cream you can have all year around! Lately, my children and I have been having fun with felt. It is our favorite material to craft with these days. It is easier for children to cut and if not sew then you can have fun gluing it together.
Make an Ice Cream Craft
In today’s activity, I helped her match the upper and lower case letters; she sorted similar colors together and then found matching sticks for each colored ice cream. I didn’t let her cut the felt because her scissor skills still need a bit of work but she did glue the pieces together. She then inserted the different colored ice cream sticks into the felt pieces to complete the ice cream. We practiced writing the upper and lower case letters on the work sheet after that. Our focus word was letter I but you can adapt this to all the alphabets. You can even use this activity to practice other languages!
What you need:
- Colored Felt
- Ice cream sticks in different colors
- Glue
- Sharpies or markers to write on felt
- Scissors
Preparation
- Cut out the different colored pieces of felt to make the ice cream as shown in photo below. Make sure they are all in pairs. I folded the felt in half before cutting it out.
- Write the upper case letter as well the lower case on each color of ice cream.
How to play:
- The child has to first find the letter I from the stack of ice cream sticks.
- Match the upper case and lower case letters in each color and glue together.
- Next insert the alphabet stick to make the ice cream.
- Count how many ice creams you have in all.
Our Cuppycake loved this activity and craft. After we were done matching and learning, she set up an ice cream stand with her sister!
