With Eid just around the corner, I am sure, you are as busy as me trying to complete your eid preparation. Have you bought your presents or are you like us- the family who prefers Eidi?
Eidi, is a gift of money that you can give children and adults alike at Eid, instead of physical gifts and presents. It is a tradition to spread the joy of Eid by giving gifts. In many Asian households, Eidi is what is actually given. Eidi is also called as Eidhi (Indian Subcontinent) or Raya (in Indonesia and Malasia). There is actually no concept of physical gifts at all. People only give money (however small an amount it may be!)
On Eid day, after the Eid prayers, when families start greeting each other, kids start teasing their adults to give their Eidi. It is traditional that the kids go to the adults to wish them and in return they wish them back by dropping a coin or a bill in their hand or Eidi bags. It is a beautiful tradition and you don’t have to be a child to receive the money. Even adults and married couples receive it from the older members. Siblings, if they are earning, give money to their younger siblings too. The amount is never important… At the end of Eid which lasts for three days, the kids count their money and then rejoice even more!
As times changed, people have moved on to buying toys and other presents for their children but in most families, the tradition is still there. In our family, we give toys on Eid to only our little children who are under 7 years old. From 8 years onwards, I prefer that they be given money instead of toys or physical gifts. As a child, I loved getting money instead of gifts. It made me feel so ‘important’. I mean, after all, who doesn’t like to spend their own money!
My son is 9 and half years old now. This year, inshaAllah (God Willing), he will be getting Eidi. He received money on his 9th birthday too. We found that giving money instead of gifts was a perfect way to teach children responsibility while giving them some freedom of choice. Another reasons why I prefer giving money from such a young age, is because it is a perfect way to teach them about money matters too.
So, if you are interested in giving Eidi and are looking for envelopes, I am sharing them below. I always find myself in trouble at Eid because there just aren’t enough cute envelopes when you need them! I like to be able to print them quickly if I need. Since most of us don’t have time and spending money to buy envelopes that will hold money, is silly, here is a list of free printable Eid envelopes that you can easily print in just a few seconds.
