Pompom Monsters Using Scrap Fabric
A few months ago, we made T-shirt yarn out of old Tee shirts. We had lots of scraps remaining from the project that we made. My kids found it amusing to tie these fabric scraps and play with them. We came up with a craft that all three of my kids enjoyed.
Using just the scraps of Tshirt yarn and craft paper, we made some really cute Pompom monsters. The next few days were spent in imaginative stories and role play. Here is how we went about making monsters using scrap fabric:

POMPOM MONSTERS USING FABRIC SCRAP
What you need:
- Old Scraps or old tees
- A skein of sewing thread (Like this.)
- Googly eyes (This type.)
- Paper (This double sided light weight pack is good)
- Scissors (This is good for both left and right handed kids.)
- Glue stick (This kind.)
What to do:
- Make pompoms: There are two ways to make the pompoms depending on whether you have larger scraps or smaller ones. We had sizes that were variable length. Some we could wrap around our fingers while others were just enough to be grabbed together. You can make pompoms the ordinary way i.e, by wrapping around your finger and then tying them together before cutting the ends to free them or you can just grab the scraps and tie them together. Shape them by cutting with a scissors.
- Cut the color paper to make body parts. We used the yellow for the hands, green for the feet and red for lips. My son who has better control with scissors did a better job of cutting. If your child is small, you may have to make these for them.
- Glue them in place. Let the child glue the body parts on to the pompom. We used a fabric glue to make sure the embellishments stuck to the fabric. My kids have used normal school white glue too and it worked.
- Time to play: You can use these with story books or as it is. My children told me funny Monster stories about how Mr. Monster met his monster match. 😀
There are many other ways to use fabric scrap but making Pompom Monsters was really fun.
Here is a toddler tip: They may have more fun playing with the scraps (or other material involved) then actually help you make them. Don’t fuss about it. It is okay… they are enjoying the whole process. It helps to let them have their own material to work with. They will watch you while you work and work side by side. Although not all of it will be perfect, they are learning by copying you. Remember: The end result isn’t important… it is the process that will teach them the skills they need to learn. Enjoy!
