Surprise by Zaheera Jina is a book that expat families will relate too. It’s a story of the life of two young Muslim children Isa and Yusuf and their parents – Oomi and Abih. The father lives abroad while the kids live with their mother. Their father surprises them by coming home.
If you’ve ever lived away from your family as a child, you’d know that joy of when dad comes home. Or when dad’s gone on a business trip and he returns.
No matter how long a parent is away… a few days or longer, kids really miss them. They are always wondering when they will be reunited again.
The story of Surprise is very simple. A Muslim family; well behaved kids… good manners. It is a model book that teaches good behavior while telling them the cute story of dad returning home.
The illustrations are cute and colorful. The words are simple enough for 5-7 year olds to read by themselves. I loved the atmosphere that was created in the book with the colorful illustrations. I could almost hear the crickets and mosquitoes on the window pane!
The story doesn’t reveal until the very end as to what the surprise is. The appearance of dad is really fun. I wished this book was a pop up! It would have been so much fun to reveal a dad behind the door. But… anyway, it is a fun book. I am sure kids would love to read this over and over again.
Surprise is available at the Djarabi Kitabs Publishing site and at the Fofkys Website. The book is available in paperback and ebook on Amazon as well.
The Kindle Version of the book is available on Kindle Unlimited.
