child's name practice activity

Little Miss Ticklebum learnt to say her name right for the first time this week. Her excitement! Our excitement! We had to celebrate that she actually learnt to say the first letter of her name right. I came up with this very simple activity which uses stickers and a foam mat. This activity can help a child recognise the letters of their name.

I wanted something less stressful, less messy and as easy as possible. I wanted an activity she would love to just go crazy with. We had foam mats that we bought last year. We also have a lot of star stickers at home because we are a family who love the Star Chart Method of Discipline. I knew she would love to have stars for getting her name right.

I drew the letter ‘R’ in capital with a pencil on the foam mat and cut it out with a scissors. This letter was then placed on her table with a page from the sticker pad. I told her that for every ‘R’ she says she can put a star on it. She loved saying not just ‘R’ but also ‘R for *her name*’!

For some reason she has been calling herself ‘R for *name* wants…’ and so on all evening. It is silly but cute. The more she says it, the more she is getting it right.

I am happy mom today because my other kids could say their names since they were 18 months or so and I have been waiting for almost a year to hear it from her. It was giving her anxiety too. She would address herself as ‘Me’ all this time.

When did your children learn to say their name right? Did you celebrate with them? Do share.
