I have seen my kids pull out these books and read by themselves even when I am not looking. My youngest had memorized ‘Brown Bear Brown Bear‘ when she was just two years old because that is all she wanted me to read. We would read other stories too but she always wanted me to end our night with this book. It was like saying: if Brown Bear was read, it was time to go to bed.
Why rhyming is important for kids.
Ba Ba Black Sheep, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, If you are happy as you know… I am sure you remember growing up singing these in your childhood. Do you know why little children are taught nursery rhymes in kindergarten?
Rhyming has many benefits. Did you know that you can tell how well your child will read, just based on how many nursery rhymes he knows? Yes! Nursery rhymes and rhyming helps your child learn to read and then eventually learn to make words.
Here are 5 things rhymes can teach your child:
- Rhyming teaches your child about language and how we use it. Rhymes which have repetitions can help your child understand similar sounding words and how to make sentences.
- It helps your child understand how words are made and they start predicting what comes next. Have you noticed how while reading a rhyming book, when you are turning a page, your child can say what word comes next. I’ve noticed my toddlers remembering just the rhyming words in the story and nothings else. They know what comes next!
- Rhyming can help your child learn to write. For example family words -an, -en, -in, -on, -op, etc. Have you noticed how a preschooler / Kindergartner while learning these words can so easily learn to write them. They guess right away when you tell the word. Quickly they mix the phonic sound with the end word and make up the word. This ability is because they are learning to associate and predict.
- Rhyming has the same benefit as music. It helps your child’s memory, concentration, social and emotional intellect, overall literacy and motor language development. It bridges mind and body to work together to learn the meaning and sound of words in a fun and interactive way. The results is that when you read nursery rhymes to your child animatedly, they will read it with expression too.
- Without doubt rhyming is fun! It adds joy to the story and kids love that. If you want your child to love to read books, introduce some fun rhyme and rhythm books for them!
Now that we know why we need rhyming books for our kids, let me tell you ten of my family’s favorite books. I can read these over and over again and my kids never tire of them even though they are much older now.

These books are for ages 0-7 years. You will start out reading for them and then they will proceed to learn to read it themselves in a few years.
- Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, is an all time classic and favorite with children of all ages. There is just something so soothing and calm about that book that kids want you to read it again and again. I’ll be honest: When I first bought that book for my kids, my son (then two years old) was bored but then his little baby sister picked it from the library one day and he wanted me to read it. Since then, he has had two more sisters and all of them know the book by heart!
- Brown Bear Brown Bear by Eric Carl and Bill Martin Jr. is another of my family’s favorite. This one, even my husband can recite from memory! I have had to read this book, over and over, almost 20 times in a day because neither the kids nor I, would have enough of it. There would be so much excitement in guessing what was on the next page! There would be cheers and joy at getting it right. 😀
- Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. ‘Infectious’, thats how I would describe this book. Do you have a clingy child? This book is so good to help them over come it. You know how the bedtime drama is… ::roll eyes:: My son would laugh and agree that that was how he was behaving but at the same time, he thoroughly enjoyed.
- Good Night Good Night Construction Site by Sherry Duskey Rinker. If you have a little boy or girls who likes bull dozers and construction equipment, this is like Good night Moon for them. I had a little girl who was crazy about construction stuff. She would sleep holding this book!
- See you Later Alligator by Sally Hopgood is a story of a tortoise who has packed his bag and will not go away! It is giggles and giggles all the way. The illustrations are such fun animals and the tortoise is adorable!
- Go, Dog Go! by P.D Eastmann. This is another book that we have borrowed from our library many times. The kids totally love the silliness. ‘Do you like my hat?’ It has been quite a few years since we got this book but my son still bursts into laughter when I randomly say it.
- Over in the Meadow has quite a few variations. It is a classic included even in the common -core syllabus textbooks. It is a calm musical book that children love. We have read an Urdu-Hindi-English STEM version of it too. It is called Asha Loves Science. See the review here. I think we love the multilingual version more.
- Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas is a fun family words rhyming book that will help your child learn these words very fast and they won’t even know they are learning! Rhyming Dust Bunnies is a fun story about dust bunnies that like to rhyme… well, except for that one little guy, Bob who just cannot.
- The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson. Do you have a child who likes monsters? I do and this book is adorable! It is a sequel to The Gruffalo and perfect for little toddlers to bigger kids.
- Dr. Seus Books. – My children love almost all of Dr. Seuss books as they are just so much fun. By now, they know that if they see the Dr.Seuss logo on the book, they must pick it up! Our most favorite of them all are ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish‘, ‘Mr. Brown can moo, can you?‘, ‘Hand Hand, Fingers Thumb by Al Perkins’ and ‘I Can Read with my Eyes Shut‘.
