Fill The Alphabet Toddler Game
Do you have a two year old who is interested in learning the Alphabets? Our Ticklebum has been interested in learning the alphabets for quite sometime now. We are always trying fun ways to teach letter recognition but the best and favourite of all is the Fill The Alphabet Toddler game. The reason we call it a toddler game is because we have two toddlers in our home : two year old Ticklebum and a one year old CuppyCake. This game is their favourite. Cuppycake is too young to understand letters but Ticklebum has been finding this game not just fun but a handy way to remember her letters.
When Ticklebum decided she wanted to learn to practice the words, she started by pulling out her brother’s books. We have D’s books from his kindergarten in a book shelf that is at her level. I let her look through them through the day and we usually pick our play idea this way. She had pulled out a phonic book one day and after reading and answering me, I found that she was able to recognize the letter more easily if she played with them a while. I also found that she wanted to learn alphabets that she found interest in more than learning them in a serial order. I let her enjoy ‘O’ a few days and we had ‘R’ and ‘T’ before we came to ‘A’. While we were studying, our one year old was always in the way, pulling at the books and getting ‘jealous’ that her sister was getting more attention.
This game solved our problem. I got out some painter’s tape and made the letter ‘A’ with it on the floor. It was big enough for Ticklebum to walk in or place toys inside. CuppyCake enjoyed watching her sister and helped by bringing toys for her at first to place in the letter. After a while she started to bring objects to arrange inside the letter herself. They walked on the letter, traced it with their fingers and the next day put some playdough in between the lines too. They have raced cars in it with their brother and even build towers inside it. They love it!
Here is how to play the Fill the Alphhabet Toddler Game:
What you need:
- Painter’s tape or any other kind that is easy to remove later.
- Some toys/ play dough/blocks/cars
How to play:
Use the Painter’s tape to make an alphabet on the floor. Make sure it is wide enough for your child to walk between. Show your child how to trace the letter. Show them where to start and where the lines end.
Let them enjoy it.
