best crafts education and parenting post of 2014

Happy New Year!

Would you like to know what the top best posts of 2014 were? Welcome! I am linking up today to some of the best posts on the web.

The Best of the Best on Words n Needles

The best of the best post here on Words n Needles was the post where I wrote about a positive parenting hack for bad habits. The Mani- and Pedi-Cure. I have talked about Nail biting in this article. This post was written in 2011 after I had had a few months of success with getting my son to stop biting his nails. Somebody in our local group on Facebook had asked for a solution to her daughter’s nail biting and I had told her about this trick. There were many other mums who were dealing with this bad habit. This thread was active for a few weeks so, I had time enough to write this post and share with them there. This article was shared a few times then and I had people write to me to tell me how much it had helped their child.

The reason why children bite their nails is because of anxiety. That anxiety could be lack of attention, it could be that they have some sensory need unfulfilled or it could be that they are just bored. Our Mani-Cure worked because I was giving my child the positive attention that he needed and some quality time without being so uptight about it. The rubbing and scrubbing along with the fragrant shampoo and massage oil was fulfilling the sensory need and he had an activity for the boredom that he was feeling. Since it is such a fun date, children look forward to being good for their mother. You can read the whole post to see how you can help your child overcome this habit too.

Very recently, while I was on my vacation, since I didn’t have time to write a new post, I had been going back and editing the old posts to add Pin-able images or to fix broken links. I noticed that this post had not been pinned on Pinterest and was lacking an image. I took a photo with my old phone, added the title and edited  to add the picture to the post. I had no idea that within a week this post would go viral on Pinterest! The most traffic that came to this post was when a bigger page on Facebook shared it. I have found that every few days this post is shared on Facebook again. In the past few months since this post became popular, it has always been in my most viewed posts. This really taught me the importance of how just one picture can make or break a post! We are so visual!!
