The Rose, the Jasmin and Pothos

My Rose is dying and I really don’t know what to do!

That’s the colour it was.

I had been gone for only two months and my little garden is in a very, very sorry state now. Once upon a time, my little garden had a rose bush (which flowered twice in the eight months that I had had it), a jasmin (which flowered many more times), a few pots of mint, an oregano, a few flowering plants ( I am still not sure what they were. I had them in three colours!), a 7″ orange that I had grown from seed and a large hanging basket of Pothos. Now, I have only one dying (or dead) rose, a dried up Jasmin and a Pothos with three leaves! All the others are dead and lost.

The three survived (or atleast, tried to survive) because my dear Hubby so thoughtfully mechanized a way to water them in our absence. But, it looks like that wasn’t enough and the winter had a bad effect on them. The soil in the rose pot is all dried up, the stem is woody and the leaves have fallen off. For now, I have trimmed the stem off and watered it as much as I can. My main problem is that I am not even sure if it has gone dormant or died off.

The Jasmin is another case. The stem is all yellow, the leaves have shed off and the soil has aphids, I think. But, Alhamdulillah, it is still alive. I can say that because there is still some green left at the base of the stem. I have cut of the dried yellow part of the stem and sprayed some diluted household disinfectant on it and then tied a polythene around it. I am not sure if that will work but, from what I have heard and read, it may work to atleast kill the bugs.

Pothos is a totally strange case. Pothos, incase you don’t know what I am talking about, is also known as ‘Money plant’ in India. It is also known as Devil’s ivy or Silver vine. Pothos is very easy to take care of or so I had heard and experienced. I have had Pothos in my garden for years and the first time I had started it was years ago when I was still in high school. I had ‘rescued’ it actually when I found just one leaf of it in our backyard. Someone had pulled the entire plant out and just one leaf was left behind. We were having a little construction there and a lot of cement and all had fallen on it and it hadn’t been watered for days. I pulled it out and kept it in a glass of water for a few days and then planted it in an extra large pot (that was the only spare one I had and I didn’t feel like buying another pot for a plant that I was sure wouldn’t survive). Miraculously, the plant survived and it thrived so well that I had 9 pots of it in 4 years! It was kept at landings and near the staircase with 3 pots at each level and they ran three floors of the building.

When we got our Pothos here last year, it was a big hanging basket and there must have been atleast 30-40 leaves on it. I watered it, spoke to it, gave it just the right light and even kept it air-conditioned for a few days in summer when the heat went too intolerable and what did I get in return? One by one all the leaves turned yellow and then brown and fell off! We even kept it in the bathroom during the summer when the humidity was too high. I had read that that usually helps. It didn’t. Now, months later and two months of no water and no care later, the funny thing has finally started to grow leaves! Believe me, I had thrown it out in the sun without water for almost a month now and barely watered it once. The soil was so dry it had left the sides of the container and looked like saw dust! May be that is what it needed… no care at all!

Anyway, Pothos is getting well again and I am worried about my Jasmin and Rose. I wonder what I can do to revive it.
