Toothbrush Trees and Pen Top Snow
There is so much fun in letting kids be just themselves. My two year old daughter wanted to paint today. She said she wanted to stamp and paint. ‘Okee dokee!’, Mommy said. How about painting with a toothbrush and stamping with pen caps?
I got out some paper and some paints and let her at it. She thoroughly enjoyed herself today because she has painted with everything she could get her hands on. Ofcourse, Mommy was right there and she had to take my permission to dip into the paint but on the whole, we discovered so many ways to paint today.
One of the tools we used was a tooth brush. We recently travelled and we got too many free travel size toothbrushes on the plane. I can’t let them brush their teeth with it because I don’t think they are hygienic so, we have been crafting with them.
Tooth brushes give a very spiky texture with thick paint. They are perfect for making trees like Christmas trees. We created this Christmas scene at the end of our play, today.
Yes, it took a lot of practice for my daughter to get the shape of the tree right. She didn’t want to stop rubbing the brush against the paper!
Another tool we used was the tops of sketch pens to stamp snow. She couldn’t stop dipping and stamping.
If you have a toddler or a preschooler, I’d like to encourage you to try this activity. Let your child use his or her imagination or let them just experiment and see what is happening.
What you need
Tools: A tooth brush, pen tops of various shapes
Paint: Acrylic or poster colour (It should be thick. Don’t dilute it.)
An old ice tray or plate (To hold the colour in)
Construction paper in different colours
Activity
Prepare before hand by taking out a little paint in ice tray or plastic plates. I prefer to use mason jar lids or an old ice tray. They are small enough to hold just the right amount of paint and there is less chance of spillage.
Tape the table with plastic wrap and tape the paper in place.
Present the tools in a dish.
Get set, GO. 🙂 Let your little one enjoy themselves.
Winter Scene
To make the Winter Scene like we did, dip the brush in green colour, move it down rubbing it on the paper diagonally and then up to make a triangle. Make them look like trees with a brown sketch pen. Finger paint a sun. Dip the pen caps in white colour and stamp the ground to make snow. Let it dry. There you have it: Toothbrush trees and pen top snow!

Will definitely try this with my boys
It looks so beautiful. When our kids have a good time, eventually we enjoy with them too. 🙂
This is really nice! I like the effects from using different brushes.
