Jupiter Storm – Book Review #ReadYourWorld
Sometimes I come across books that makes my heart happy! Jupiter Storm by Marti Dumas is one such book. I am excited to review this for the Multicultural Children’s Book Day on 27th January 2018.

Jupiter Storm by Marti Dumas is a chapter book about a 10 year old girl named Jacquelyn Marie Johnson. Jackie for short. She has 5 brothers and she is not the eldest but… she loves to be in charge and takes her responsibilities very well. Jackie loves science, drawing and exploring but she also loves dresses, pretty shoes and hairbands. Knowing her nature, her parents trust her with age appropriate responsibilities like taking care of her garden or minding her brothers, for example.
Jupiter Storm is how she discovers a chrysalis egg in one of her pots. She smuggles it into the house, writes detailed logs of it like a real scientist and then when out pops a dragon- the real adventure begins!
I loved this story. It 236 pages of sheer excitement, adventure, humor, relatable family dynamics, lessons on morals and good behavior and oh-so-much more.
What I liked about Jupiter Storm:
- Children relate to it. I have a 10 year old and even though he is a boy, I know exactly how the way he thinks. I sometimes wonder at how I was just like him growing up. Interested in exploring, responsibility of siblings, school projects and dealing with adults.
- Promotes diversity and talks about real life situations.
- Good behavior, morals and ethics from having a good family structure.
- Chores and responsibility. How normal it is.
- Technology free childhood. How normal children behave. Going out, taking interests in surrounding, playing and crafting… Making paper dolls. I Loved loved that!
- Good parenting. The book is filled with examples of how the parents support their child in dealing with her struggles. They give her the freedom to be herself but still be there to stand up firm to protect her and help her come out of her mess.
- Breaks stereotypes. This is the most beautiful thing I found in the book. Dad doing the grocery while mom fixes the sink. Yes! It is totally normal in my house and I loved that it shows children about strong women characters. Jackie herself is a brave and an insightful little lady.
- Perfect to read aloud to kids aged 6-12yr olds. I have a 5.5 year old and she loved me reading it to her. In fact, she found herself relating to her so much too.
