What is the Saudi National Day?
Every year on 23rd September, Saudi Arabia celebrates the unification of the Kingdom of Najd and Kingdom of Hijaz region becoming Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Yes, it is the day Arabia became ‘Saudi’ Arabia so we call it the Saudi National Day.
Growing up here in Saudi, we always wondered when Saudi Arabia came to be; because the only two holidays that KSA celebrated were the two Eids – Eid al Fitr (in Ramadan) and Eid al Adha (during Hajj). It was in 2005 that the Late King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz acknowledged the need to have a Saudi National Day. Since then, slowly, year by year, the celebrations grew.
Generally, on Saudi National Day, it is a holiday. The youth – both Saudi and the Residents (because we are united like that!), come out wearing green and white. We wear and wave the Saudi Flag or color all things green.

Ever since my kids started school, I have been seeing more and more celebrations. In the beginning, we used to have just patriotic songs, wearing Saudi clothes and celebrating their traditions while the little kids got to do some crafts. Now that my children are a little older, we have crafts and artwork at school.

What do Saudis do on National Day?
As I said, like all countries of the world, we love wearing and waving our flag. Generally, people drive around town with their flags and decorations. The whole city is light up green and white. It is really pretty!
In Jeddah, you will find everyone heading to the Corniche! We wait for the fireworks while chilling out with friends and family on the beach… like till midnight!
There are some great offers for shopping and dining out so people don’t want to miss that.
The fireworks in Riyadh are really something to see too! Want to know what events are happening in your city? Click here to find out and join the fun!
Saudi National Day Art for Schools
My girls had Saudi National Day themed projects to submit. Growing up, we never had Saudi National Day so I had no idea what they wanted. My children on the other hand were so excited to be doing a project for the first time. Our teachers told us that it had to be artwork.
Here is what we made:
Saudi National Day Glitter Painting
Can you believe my almost 5 year old made this? Well…okay a little help from mom. 🙂
What you need:
- Canvas
- Green glitter
- Golden glitter pen
- Green sketch pen or gel pen
- Thick Black marker
- A bottle of glue
- A map of Saudi Arabia
- A print out of various cities of Saudi Arabian skyline
- Black card stock for the Kaaba
- Pencil and rubber
- Scissors
- Newspaper or Sufra to protect the surface.
Here is how you too can make it! I printed out the map and a few landmarks of the various cities of Saudi Arabia which we then cut out. My daughter used this as a stencil. To protect the floor, I spread some newspapers on the floor and then handed her a bottle of glue to generously fill the map with. We sprinkled (lots and lots of) green glitter on the map. This was left to dry for 15 minutes. Once it is dry, just tilt the board and collect the loose glitter on the newspaper. Outline the map and skyline with golden glitter pen. Use the black card to cut out the shape of Kaaba and stick it in place.
Don’t forget to draw the Saudi Emblem and your message!
Here is what the other project looked like:
How to make these? Our exhibit is a map of Saudi Arabia cut out of foam board and then generously decorated with glitter just like above. (Kids love spreading glue and sprinkling the glitter. Make sure to protect the surface!)
I had photoshopped the Saudi Arabia landmarks together and then printed them in card stock. The printable is a coloring page that I had made for her. She colored it in with sketch pens. To make everything pop, we used glitter pen to outline the whole thing. Next we glued the decoration together. We added a printed ’88 National Day’ badge and a flag to complete the look.
Easy peasy…no?
