Dear Muslim Mom to Daughters, I have a book to share with you: Muslim Girl Growing Up: A guide to Puberty by Natalia Nabil. If you have an adolescent daughter in the age group of 9-14 year, I am sure you are wondering how to initiate the conversation about Aunt Flo. Introducing this awesome book:

Muslim Girl Growing Up written by Natalia Nabil and illustrated by Melani Putra is one book I wish I had read when I was growing up. InshaAllah, in a few years, when my daughters are the right age, I know I will have a little help using this to initiate the conversation.

If you are a regular reader here, you will know that I am always looking for diverse products and books that will help our Muslim Children. Manners, Morals and positive role models in our children’s lives are very important in today’s times. Our children need books and toys that speak about them.

Natalia Nabil wrote this book for her own daughter. Knowing very well that there just isn’t any information on the topic from a Muslim perspective. We all know how difficult it is to talk to our daughters about Puberty. It is not about just the physiological changes but the emotional as well. They may have questions, fears and anxiety when they get their first period. Muslim Girl Growing up is that resource to guide you and your daughter.

Natalia wrote this book sharing our Islamic traditions and culture, while so naturally weaving in all the information needed for their age. She addresses all the fears and well… helps avoid the embarrassing conversations. 😀

The illustrations, the language and the friendly elder-sister-like tone is perfect. I especially loved that the information is just enough for their age. Not too much and not any less. It is every doubt and fear calmly answered.

Muslim Girl Growing Up – A Guide to Puberty

Here is a general idea of what Muslim Girl Growing up includes:

  1. What is puberty and it’s stages. It is a general description of the changes happening in their body that they may be noticing themselves. If they haven’t noticed then this will be a good guide for them.
  2. Menstruation. What to expect, what to do when your first period starts and you don’t have any help. How to calmly approach an elder and inform them. I loved LOVED this info! In detail, she discuses every thing that a girl would want to know and remember.
  3. Hygiene tips. A general idea of how to keep clean and not feel disgusted by what’s happening.
  4. Religious duties to perform. How to do Ghusl.  Here, I’d like to add that I really liked that although the Madh’habs differ on ways to do Ghusl, Natalia has definitely nailed the key points. Depending on what Tareeqa you follow, you can very easily add your little two cents into this.
  5. What you can do and cannot. Questions about prayers, fasts, Quran… doubts on what they can and cannot do answered.
  6. Personal privacy to protect them. I am so happy that she added this last chapter to the book. It talks about safe touch and wrong touch and also how to inform an adult without feeling guilt.

This book is a MUST HAVE for every household that has a daughter.

This book was sent to me for review but I love it so much that I am personally buying it for all my family and close friends. It makes a great gift for girls age 10-15 years. If you know a mom who has girls that age or you are a grandparent, you can send this to them as a blessing.
